At the December 5, 2014, meeting of the Florida Board of Medicine, the Board voted to have two members serve as Chairman and two members serve as Vice Chairman for six month terms. James W. Orr, Jr., M.D., FACOG, FACS, served as Chairman from January 1, 2015, until June 30, 2015. Steven Rosenberg, M.D. served as Vice Chairman for that same time period. We would like to thank both Dr. Orr and Dr. Rosenberg for their service as Chairman and Vice Chairman for the first half of 2015.
The Board is pleased to announce that Bernardo Fernandez, M.D. will serve as Chairman and Sarvam TerKonda, M.D. will serve as Vice Chairman for the last half of the year, July 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015.
Dr. Fernandez has been licensed in Florida since 1991 and is the chief executive officer of Baptist Health Medical Group. He was a graduate of Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico in 1987. From there, he completed a residency in internal medicine in 1990 and a fellowship in vascular medicine in 1991. He is board certified by the American Board of Vascular Medicine and a Fellow of the Society of Vascular Medicine and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Fernandez was invited in June 2011 to serve on the selection panel for the White House Fellows program, one of America’s most prestigious programs for leadership and public service. Dr. Fernandez was appointed to the Board by Governor Scott on June 11, 2013. Since that time, he has served on several committees of the Board including the Joint Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine Office Surgery Rule Subcommittee, Office Surgery Procedures Subcommittee, Rules/Legislative Committee, Finance and Process Accountability Committee, and the Telemedicine Committee. In addition, during his tenure, he has served as Chairman of the Probation Committee and Vice Chairman of the Board. Dr. Fernandez will serve as Chairman July 1 – December 31.
Dr. TerKonda has been licensed in Florida since 1997 and practices at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida where he serves as an Assistant Professor. He also has staff privileges at Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital, in Jacksonville. Dr. TerKonda graduated medical school from the University of Missouri in 1989. From there, he completed a residency in general surgery in 1994 and in plastic surgery in 1996 from Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, and a fellowship in plastic surgery/cosmetic-aesthetic surgery in 1997 from the University of Alabama. He is board certified in both surgery and plastic surgery. Dr. TerKonda is also associated with the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Mayo Alumni Society. Dr. TerKonda was appointed to the Board by Governor Scott on June 13, 2013. He has served on numerous committees of the Board including the Credentials Committee, Rules/Legislative Committee, Telemedicine Committee, Probation Committee and the Surgical Care/Quality Assurance Committee. In addition, he served as Chairman of the Joint Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine Office Surgery Rule Subcommittee. Dr. TerKonda also holds medical licenses in Alabama, Minnesota, and Georgia. Dr. TerKonda will serve as Vice Chairman July 1 – December 31st.
