The Florida Board of Medicine mourns the passing of Dr. Nabil El Sanadi, compassionate physician, dedicated board member and former chairman on January 23, 2016.

Dr. El Sanadi was first appointed to the Florida Board of Medicine in 2002, serving for three terms, and was elected as chairman in 2014. During his tenure, El Sanadi offered his considerable expertise to myriad councils, while also presiding over notable committees, including the Finance Committee, the Surgical Care and Quality Assurance Committee and the Compassionate Use Committee, which provided insights into medical marijuana rule development in Florida. He also served as a valuable resource to other committees, such as the Medical Fraud Committee and the Pain Management Clinic Rule Committee, where he helped develop the training requirements for physicians practicing in pain management clinics. As chairman of the Board, he helped shape medical practice in the state, spearheading regulatory efforts aimed at telemedicine and office surgery. Additionally, Dr. El Sanadi lead the Board to take disciplinary action against Florida physicians alleged to have violated Florida’s Medical Practice Act. In the spirit of collegiality, he collaborated with other members to reduce the biennial licensure renewal fee to $250 for the 2015 and 2016 licensing biennia. El Sanadi was highly respected for his proactive leadership and his abiding devotion to improving the profession.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague, Dr. Nabil El Sanadi,” said Florida Board of Medicine Chairman Dr. Steven Rosenberg. “He was a dedicated physician and committed to helping patients in Florida. His passion will not be forgotten by the members of the board. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this time.”

“I speak for the entire Division of Medical Quality Assurance when I say that it was an honor to have known Dr. El Sanadi,” said Division Director Lucy Gee. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.”

El Sanadi will be remembered for his considerable integrity, encouraging leadership and genuine warmth. He was a caring physician, focused on improving the practice of medicine and the health of all people in Florida. His untimely passing is a true loss to the Florida Board of Medicine, the Department of Health and the entire medical community.
